As we wait for this difficult time to pass, teachers are finding ways to lift one another up by allowing their students to reach out to classmates in creative ways. For the “We Are Wagar” mural, our stagier, Maria, worked with students to create the stencils used in the painting. In the SIS program, it’s important to develop life skills, work skills, social skills and academic skills lessons. In this project, art was used to teach academic skills and improve verbal skills. How? While Maria pasted the letters onto the wall, she asked the SIS student “how do we say this letter in French? How do we say it in English?”
One of the goals for the student she’s working with is to improve his verbal skills. Once the student completed the mural, he was asked “are you proud? Look at the great work you created for all the school to enjoy?” A photo of his reaction is included in this post and it’s priceless. Thank you to our stagieres and dedicated Wagar Adult Ed staff for making these trying times a little easier for our students. We-are-Wagar.
