Distinguishing itself as a learning centre for the community and beyond, Wagar Adult Education Centre is making a difference each and every day with its diverse programs for adults with special needs as well as regular language instruction classes. While these separate programs may seem like worlds apart, they provide an opportunity for mutual learning and support.
Student success is the driving force that shapes and defines the character of Wagar Adult Education Centre. Students from all backgrounds come to learn English and French in a welcoming environment. The centre is also where adults with special needs come to learn social skills, life skills and vocational skills. With a diverse student population coming together, the emphasis is on inclusion, collaboration and community.
Wagar Adult Education Centre offers a variety of programs for special needs adults providing educational instruction and social support in life skills learning and vocational preparation. Classes are given weekdays and students can attend either full-time or part-time depending on their ability and schedule.
The focus of the Sociovocational Integration Program is designed to prepare adults with special needs who are high functioning to become more independent in the community. The program aims to develop job skills with the ultimate goal of integration into competitive employment. The program has a “stage” component and offers students the opportunity to explore many career options in a supported employment environment. Community exposure and social outings are key aspects of the program.
The Social Integration Services Program is dedicated to assisting adults with intellectual challenges to acquire the fundamental skills to engage and participate in community life. The program helps to improve their communication skills and deal with social challenges. Participants are taught basic writing and mathematical skills and also enjoy leisure activities and art classes. The program focuses on topics designed to increase their independence and the quality of their social behaviours.
Parallel to the special needs programs, the centre offers various levels of English and French language instruction as part of the Common Core Basic Education Program. Using social, professional and inter-personal situations that reflect real-life experiences, full-time day classes and part-time evening classes are available for those who would like to improve their English or French language skills.
Wagar Adult Education Centre is committed to providing quality educational programs to adult learners and to those with special needs. The Wagar team work tirelessly to ensure a safe and positive learning environment and strive for a school community where educators go above and beyond to provide engaging, student centred lessons with best practices in place in their respective classes.
